Live Review: Washington @ Corner Hotel, Melbourne - September 17, 2010

This is the fifth time I’ve seen Washington play live and she’s definitely grown in popularity since seeing her at Yah Yahs in Fitzroy with fellow JJJ unearthed winners Hungry Kids of Hungary and Philadelphia Grand Jury in front of about 100 punters. For those with their heads in the stand, Washington’s national album launch tour has sold out no less than five shows at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel - an all-time record. Washington has been bagged in some quarters for her newfound popularity, but it is clear from her live shows that she is as grounded as ever - the look of unbridled joy when the crowd broke into an impromptu sing-along to “Underground” could not have been more genuine.

Washington played most of the songs off the new album, but one notable omission was personal favourite “One Man Band”, but I can live with that. Highlights from the set were “Underground” (Megan solo), “1997”, “The Hardest Part”, “Someone Else In Mind” (Megan solo to finish the show) and a cover of The Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself”, during which Megan sounded uncannily like Chrissy Amphlett.

Overall, it was a great show. Everyone who has a ticket to her/their sold out shows around the country definitely have something to look forward to.

Washington - 8/10
